‘Real estate is not about houses, it’s about people’ Leslie Joseph Hooker

Call me old-fashioned, but I believe the original ‘Mr Hooker’ got it right when he made that statement. It’s such a simple philosophy that seems very hard to find in the consumer world these days. Each and every one of us expects great service? Clients and customers love it and appreciate it!

When you deliver an exemplary level of service you can’t fail; people remember you, they trust you and they come back to you. The alternative is… they won’t!

I’ve always had a passion for real estate and it’s a profession I’ve enjoyed doing for over 10 years. It’s a job I love and I enjoy helping people.

It is about the people, and I’ve always believed in the basic principles of good, old fashioned service.

LJHooker - Jeff Shortland - Since 2005

My background:

• 25 years of Military service in the RAAF (Cooks Assistant & Clerk Supply)

• Married to Leah since June 1982

• Two sons

• Two daughters-in-law

• One grandchild; and

• Foster parents to ‘Marshall’ (the cat)

• Oriental gardens

• Playing guitar

• Music

• History

• Good movies

• Being a grandfather.

Before I was in real estate I …. was in the military for 25 years. I joined the Royal Australian Air Force when I was 17. After a brief stint in Catering, I became a supply clerk.

If I wasn’t in real estate I would …probably still be in the RAAF (but very near to compulsory retiring age).

When I was 18, I wish I knew … that I would be married within the next 12 months. (I was married the day before my 19th birthday.)

The person I admire most is … my wife Leah; we celebrate 35 years of marriage this year.

Over the years I have learnt … that being organised is the real secret to happiness.

I wish I had … the ability to fluently speak multiple languages.

Money … I’d like enough to be able to travel and be comfortable in retirement.

I bought my first house …Leah and I bought our first home in Medowie, NSW when we were 22. We now live in ‘the Meadows’ in Dunlop

The best investment I made… our first home.

My dream house would be… it might need some minor tweaking but our current home in Dunlop is my dream home; however, the ‘dream garden’ is a work in progress. Once the garden is finished, only then will the dream be complete!

I had the time of my life when …Leah and I travelled to England in 2012; best holiday ever!

The biggest lesson I have ever learnt is … how quickly the years pass; it makes no sense worrying about the things you have no control over. Best to be happy and enjoy life.

My motto in life is … from my favourite poem ‘Invictus’, ‘It matters not how strait the gate, how charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate, I am captain of my soul.’

My favourite pastime … I can’t have one hobby; I’d get bored too quickly. In my downtime, I have several favourite pastimes: a good movie, ‘playing’ the guitar, music, writing my book (another work in progress), spending time in the garden, holidays, Chinese gardens and studying history would round out the favourites.

I’d like to …spend more time holidaying in the UK; From the Romans to the Beatles, I love the history.

Nothing beats … the feeling of becoming a grandfather.

Needed the property to sell quickly which it did Jeff made the sale go very smoothly

Lisa Cabrera c/o Mick McCann WA

Jeff Shortland comes across as some one that has your best interests at heart. He explains everything in detail and is patient with all your questions. I would not hesitate in recommending Jeff to anyone who wishes to sell their property. His knowledge of the market was broad and pretty spot on with the pricing. Thank you Jeff.

Gayle - Gungahlin

The reputation of LJ Hooker Gungahlin and also Jeff Shortland was the main reason for contracting the sale to them. Integrity and reliability are two of the main things recommending them along with the "down to earth" approach which eliminates the "bull***" so commonly associated with some other agencies. We have had an association with this agency for the past 14 years with respect to both sales and purchases and also with respect to property management and will continue to use them in the future. What more can I say! Jeff is truly the most professional and trustworthy agent we have known. He must be considered your greatest asset when dealing in real estate as without his type of expertise, you could well have a less than satisfactory experience!

Les & Gay Mouat, Nicholls.

When I recently decided to put my home in the Gungahlin area of Canberra on the market, Jeff Shortland from LJ Hookers was the person I contacted. I had previously discussed sale options with a number of Real Estate Agents, including Jeff. I selected Jeff as I always found him to be very professional, trustworthy and extremely knowledgeable on the local market. During the pre and post sale processes, Jeff kept me updated and was always available if I had any questions or concerns. He was always considerate, polite and reassuring. I thoroughly recommend Jeff Shortland to anyone looking to sell or purchase property as I felt safe in his capable hands as he listened to me and always provided market information supported by current sales statistics and property market reports.

The experience with Jeff Shortland selling my investment property was excellent. Not only does Jeff know the market he is a very kind and considerate person. He pitched my property to the right audience and achieved a sale that was above my expectation in a very short timeframe. I would highly recommend Jeff's services.

Mel Duncan, Jerrabomberra

I cannot recommend Jeff Shortland more highly, the circumstances surrounding the sale of my home were very stressful and emotional, due to the loss of my husband. Jeff promised he would deal with everything so that I would not have to stress and he did. He arranged the sale of my home in a quick and very professional manner, he kept me informed every step of the way. He always returned my calls in a timely manner and was very patient and helpful. My home sold very quickly, and I was more than impressed with Jeff's negotiating skills. I would highly recommend Jeff to my family and friends if they were to sell their homes. I think LJ Hooker are lucky to have Jeff as a member of their team, I have had dealings with other Real Estate agents in the past, mostly they were arrogant and pushy. Jeff was a true gentleman and I am glad to say my experience in selling my home was relatively stress free because of Jeff.

I chose to sell through Jeff Shortland. He just so happened to work at LJ Gungahlin. Jeff is kick-ass. Super patient and always uplifting. Jeff was (and probably still is) awesome. Professional and personable from start to finish. He's a one-man show. Give him a raise please.

Robbie, Canberra.

Very professional, well mannered, polite and calm

We met Jeff Shortland through the Amaroo letter drop that LJ Hooker Gungahlin ran for a home valuation assessment ... the reward program did have some interest to us. But timing is everything as we had only recently started to contemplate a down size from 6 BR to 3BR in the same area. Jeff Shortland is an excellent ambassador for LJ Hooker... he ran a very successful campaign with a non-standard large home ... we had a good result and both parties are happy! We can unreservedly recommend Jeff Shortland- particularly for his professionalism, openness and knowledge of the target area. We were pleased with his marketing plan and we saw it played out in a reasonable time. He has a great personality for the job. Best regards, Gary and Rachelle Allan
